Supporting students with CAPD in the classroom

A school in Western Australia operates six Hear and Learn Redcat soundfield systems every day. During a recent service call, the Deputy Principal explained that the main reason for adopting this technology was to support students with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD).

By improving the delivery of a teacher’s spoken word, soundfield technology helps learners with CAPD concentrate on instruction instead of being distracted by competing noises such as air conditioning, movement, or chatter. This allows them to stay focused and enjoy more time in the classroom.

The social impact of removing learners from class

In a recent interview, we spoke with Ashley, who was diagnosed with CAPD at the age of nine. For Ashley, assistance often meant being taken out of the classroom for private sessions:

“I was removed from friends a lot of the times.”
“I was removed from the actual classroom environment that I actually liked to be in.”

Her reflections highlight how important it is for learners with CAPD to remain within the classroom environment — connected to friends and the shared learning experience.

Benefits for all learners

While soundfield systems are often adopted to help learners with hearing loss or to prevent teacher vocal fatigue, their impact is broader. By creating a listening environment where every student feels as though the teacher is speaking directly to them, Redcat systems benefit the entire class — improving comprehension, engagement, and inclusivity.
