In the evolving landscape of educational infrastructure, compliance with regulations is crucial, particularly when it comes to supporting students with hearing difficulties. Hear and Learn, a leader in VSBA hearing augmentation solutions, recently completed a project in Melbourne that demonstrates this commitment. Their UConnect family of hearing augmentation solutions is designed to meet and exceed the requirements set by the Victorian School Building Authority’s Building Quality Standards Handbook (BQSH).
A cornerstone of Hear and Learn’s products is ensuring that learning spaces are equipped with technology that is both compliant and adaptable. In consultation with leading education architect Sibling, and electrical consultant Lucid, this project saw the installation of UConnect Mini systems in six new rooms at a school in Glen Waverley. These systems include on-wall interfaces and transmitters that seamlessly broadcast audio to any personal hearing device, ensuring accessibility for all users, whether they are students, teachers, or visitors.
In addition to the UConnect Mini, Hear and Learn installed their all-in-one SoundHouse solution in four other rooms, specifically addressing the BQSH’s requirement for fixed hearing augmentation systems in multipurpose areas. The SoundHouse and the portable Redcat soundfield systems ensure that the teacher’s voice is evenly distributed across the learning space, enhancing the auditory experience for students with hearing impairments.
Safety and practicality were also top priorities. The PowerPlate, which supports Hear and Learn’s Redcat portable soundfield, was mounted in a tamper-proof, lockable enclosure designed for hearing augmentation systems, eliminating trip hazards by keeping cables securely in place. This installation reflects the Victorian guidelines that require technology to be safe and free from unsecured cables.
